At 87 years old, Innocent Finds Solace in OPA: A MANEPO Initiative

At the age of 87, Innocent lives a solitary life. It’s been seven years since he lost his wife, and the whereabouts of his relatives remain unknown. With his legs and eyes causing him constant trouble, he faces a multitude of challenges.”

Walking has become a painful task due to his leg problems, and his eyesight is failing, adding to his difficulties. These physical limitations have made him increasingly reliant on the kindness and support of others. Once a company driver, Innocent expected a peaceful retirement with the pension he was promised. However, that promise was broken, and financial hardships began to engulf him. Each passing day brings the looming specter of hunger and shelter.

In the midst of this solitary struggle, the Older Persons Association (OPA) has become Innocent’s beacon of hope. He has been a dedicated member from the very start and has transformed into the family he lost. Its members have extended their arms to embrace him warmly.

OPA members are now the people he relies on for both physical and emotional support. They visit to clean his home, do his laundry, and assist with daily chores that have become overwhelming for him. Their generosity and compassion bring a ray of light into his otherwise lonely existence. “I’m truly at loss of words to express my gratitude to my OPA friends. I thank them for everything they have done for me”, He says.

Innocent has a challenge of taking care of himself, but he remains deeply grateful for the existence of OPAs. He reflects on the immense impact they have had, not only on his life but on countless others facing similar circumstances. Their presence has made all the difference.

For Innocent, the Older Persons Association is not just a group; it’s a lifeline. It serves as a testament to the power of human compassion and solidarity. In the toughest moments of life, when it’s easy to feel forgotten and alone, the OPA provides a sense of belonging, comfort, and hope. Recently, Innocent’s home sustained damage due to Cyclone Freddy. While the storm left its mark, the OPA members stepped in to provide what they could. They managed to cover the damaged section with plastic sheets, offering Innocent at least some semblance of shelter and security.
