MANEPO Applauds President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera for Assenting to the Older Persons’ Bill 2024

Manepo celebrates President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera for his exemplary leadership in assenting to the Older Persons’ Bill 2024. This landmark decision shows His Excellency’s deep commitment to creating a society that truly values and respects its elderly members.

“His Excellency’s action demonstrates, beyond measure, his government’s commitment towards the creation of Malawi wokomera tonse. Bravo, Bwana President,” the statement reads, signed by MANEPO Executive Director, Andrew Kavala.

President Dr. Chakwera’s dedication to the welfare of older persons is further evidenced by his proactive role as one of the first four Heads of State in Africa to ratify the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Older Persons in Africa. This pivotal move marks a significant step towards ensuring that the rights and dignity of our senior citizens are upheld and protected.

At MANEPO, we remain steadfast in our mission to eradicate entrenched myths and stereotypes surrounding older persons. The unfortunate reality is that these harmful beliefs have had devastating consequences.

In 2022 alone, 15 elderly individuals were tragically killed due to witchcraft suspicions, and in 2023, this number rose to 25. Such statistics highlight the urgent need for continued advocacy and education to combat these dangerous misconceptions.

As we celebrate this legislative milestone, we call upon all Malawians to join us in our resolve to build a society that supports and protects its older persons with dignity and respect.

Together, we can march forward united in our efforts to create a safer and more inclusive Malawi for all.
