The Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organizations (MANEPO) hosted a heartwarming Mother’s Day celebration on October 15, 2024, at Mwazisi School grounds in Rumphi. The event brought together 500 elderly women, honoring the grandmothers in the community.
The celebration was made even more special by the gracious presence of the First Lady of Malawi, Madam Monica Chakwera. Her warm engagement with the grandmothers—sharing gifts and spending quality time—touched everyone deeply. For many of these women, it wasn’t just the gifts that made the day, but the simple act of being seen, appreciated, and loved. Her visit reminded us all of the vital role our elders play and how much they deserve our care and respect.
In his speech, MANEPO’s Country Director, Andrew Kavala, emphasized the significance of supporting and honoring the elderly, stating, “Our elders are the pillars of our society. It’s up to all of us to make sure they live with dignity and comfort, knowing they are valued for all they’ve given over the years.” His words felt like a call to action, especially to the youth.
This year’s Mother’s Day was about love in its simplest form—laughing, sharing stories, and being present with our grandmothers and as they enjoyed their special Mother’s Day treat, their smiles and laughter reminded us of the deep connections we all share across generations.
To all the grandmothers in Malawi and beyond, every day, we cherish and honor you.
