The Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organizations (MANEPO) is committed to enhancing the health and well-being of the elderly through critical health awareness and support initiatives. MANEPO, in collaboration with HelpAge Germany and with support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Development (BMZ), held an NCD and HIV & AIDS awareness campaign in Kalembo, Balaka District. The event was part of a broader project aimed at addressing the increasing prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and HIV & AIDS in Malawi’s elderly population.
Maria Masiye, BMZ Project Manager for MANEPO, emphasized the necessity for elderly individuals to undergo regular screenings for NCDs, such as hypertension and diabetes. “We want to raise awareness in rural communities about NCDs and HIV & AIDS, which are increasingly affecting the elderly, a culture of health-seeking behavior is vital, allowing the elderly to access appropriate medical care in a timely manner.” She said
To achieve this, MANEPO has supported the establishment of NCD clinics in health facilities across Balaka, Zomba, and Machinga Districts. Furthermore, the organization has trained community-based healthcare providers to ensure older adults receive comprehensive care close to their homes.
Anne Valeta, the NCD Coordinator for Balaka District, reported that hypertension remains the most widespread NCD among the elderly. In just three months, between July and September, the district registered 550 hypertension cases and 103 diabetes cases among older adults. MANEPO’s support has been instrumental in providing the screening tools and resources necessary to make NCD screening more accessible. Valeta highlighted that the ongoing awareness initiatives have helped to dispel myths, such as misconceptions linking NCDs to witchcraft, thereby reducing stigma and encouraging more elderly individuals to seek medical help.
Balaka District Council Chairperson, Pharaoh Kambiri, encouraged non-governmental organizations to initiate more projects that support the elderly. MANEPO’s dedication to sensitizing communities on NCDs, HIV & AIDS, COVID-19, and issues of elder abuse is a critical step toward building healthier, more informed, and resilient communities.
