BLANTYRE, MALAWI (UPDATE): On Thursday, April 24, 2025, we commenced our Global Intergenerational Week 2025 (GIW25) activities with an engaging dialogue in Chemusa Township, Blantyre. This initiative brought together young individuals and the older people to foster understanding and unity within the community.
Understanding the Roots of Intergenerational Tensions
During the discussions, participants delved into the underlying causes of conflicts between generations. The youth highlighted factors such as:
Limited Employment Opportunities: Many young people face challenges in securing jobs, leading to frustration and misunderstandings with older community members.
Communication Gaps: A lack of effective communication channels between the youth and the elderly often results in misconceptions and strained relationships.
Insufficient Parental Support: Some youths feel unsupported by their families, which can exacerbate feelings of isolation and resentment.

Conversely, the elderly expressed concerns about:
Disrespect and Accusations: Instances where they are accused of practices like witchcraft, leading to social ostracization.
Erosion of Traditional Values: A perceived decline in the respect traditionally accorded to elders within the community.
Commitment to Reconciliation and Mutual Respect: Despite these challenges, the dialogue concluded on a hopeful note. Both generations acknowledged the importance of mutual respect and committed to:
Regular Intergenerational Meetings: Establishing forums for continuous dialogue and understanding.
Community Projects: Collaborating on initiatives that benefit all age groups, fostering a sense of shared purpose.

Global Intergenerational Week, observed annually from April 24 to 30, aims to celebrate and promote connections between generations. The campaign encourages individuals, communities, NGOs, and governmental institutions to embrace intergenerational practices, strengthening ties between the young and the elderly. #GIW25
