Experts Stress Urgency of Inclusive Disaster Preparedness for Older People

Thyolo – Malawi (May 2, 2025): Experts in Disaster Risk Management (DRM) are calling for immediate action to ensure that older persons are fully integrated into disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts, given the increasing frequency and intensity of disasters.

This critical issue was addressed on Friday, May 2, 2025, at Game Haven Hotel in Thyolo district during a Disaster Risk Management Training organized by the Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organizations (MANEPO). The training, which was made possible through the support of HelpAge International, aimed to equip MANEPO staff with the necessary skills to better prepare for and respond to emergencies, with a specific focus on protecting and supporting older people.

Tamala Nthala, a Lecturer in Disaster Risk Management at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) and one of the training facilitators, highlighted the growing threat posed by the frequent disasters of the past decade. She emphasized that these disasters have disproportionately affected vulnerable groups, particularly older persons, who face higher risks.

“It’s essential that all sectors—governments, civil society, communities, and experts—collaborate to strengthen systems and ensure that no one is left behind in disaster response and recovery,” she stressed.

Andrew Kavala, MANEPO Executive Director, underscored the importance of the training, describing it as a strategic effort to improve the organization’s ability to respond effectively to emergencies affecting older persons.

“This training is not just about gaining technical knowledge; it’s about building partnerships that ensure older people are not sidelined in times of crisis,” he explained.
