June 23, 2025 | An 85-year-old woman, Ruth Lauzhi, was found brutally murdered outside her home in Bazhu Village, Nsanje District, late Sunday night. Family members reported that Ms. Lauzhi was severely beaten and her throat was slit. The attackers, who remain unidentified, are also suspected of stealing some of her belongings, including clothing.
At the time of the attack, Ms. Lauzhi was living with her 22-year-old grandson. Her brother-in-law, who is deaf and mute, lives nearby. The family is devastated and has appealed to the authorities for justice.
“We don’t know who did this, and we also don’t know the motive,” said her brother, Richard Monja. “This has instilled fear in the entire community.”
Sub Inspector Agnes Zalakoma, spokesperson for Nsanje Police, confirmed the murder and stated that investigations “are” ongoing. The motive behind the killing remained unknown.
This tragic incident highlights the increasing concern over violence against older persons in Malawi, many of which cases remain unresolved.
