FIRST LADY CELEBRATES MOTHER’S DAY WITH OLDER WOMEN

15th October in Malawi marks the day set out for the celebration of the special women in our lives, yes our mothers and mother figures. It was a joy then, to learn that the mother of the Nation, the First Lady, Her Excellency Madame Monica Chakwera wanted to spend this beautiful day with Elderly Women and truly seasoned mother's themselves.


Set at Kamwendo Community Ground in Mchinji District, various women who also play mother figures in the leading roles they play in the country accompanied the First Lady at the auspicious event.


The former First Lady of the Republic of Malawi, Callista Muntharika, The Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, the spouses to the MDF commander and Inspector General and female parliamentarians were some of the notable women at the event.


In her remarks, the First Lady commended the good role that older women play in the society as custodians of culture and traditions.


"As children and grandchildren, we have a role of ensuring that life is easier for older women as a way of thanking them for all the sacrifices they made for us" she added.


The Executive Director for Malawi Network of Older Person's Organizations, Andrew Kavala said it is unfortunate that older persons Are victimised by those that are supposed to protect them.


"We need to make improvements to the way the justice system works in handling cases to do with older person abuse and murders" he said


The First Lady also gave gifts to 200 older women and widows from the community and made a donation to Malawi Network of Older Person's Organizations to foster in the activities carried out by the organization.


Traditional dances like ingoma and gule wamkulu spiced the beautiful event
