Malawi Network of older persons organisation and Malawi Law Society have signed a Memorandum of Understanding as one way of promoting and protecting the rights of the elderly.

The purpose of the agreement is to develop advocacy and programme cooperation between the two institutions and to cooperate in their mutual interest for the benefit of older adults in Malawi.

The partnership comes at a time when Malawi has been experiencing a surge in instances of violence and killings of older persons, particularly to witchcraft accusations.

The key to note is that such cases take longer to prosecute in the courts, for example, 2022 had about 25 cases of older people killings, and only one case was resolved by the courts.

This reluctance sets a bad precedence for would-be offenders and shows that authorities are not diligent in fighting against violence against older persons
